Kulutusyhteiskunnan tulevaisuus -konferessi

Tulevaisuuden tutkimuskeskus järjestää toukokuussa 2009 konferenssin kulutusyhteiskunnan tulevaisuudesta. Konferenssikutsu tulee alla.

Dear colleagues and friends,

We have a great privilege to invite you to attend the 11th Annual Conference of the Finland Futures Research Centre and Finland Futures Academy in Tampere, Finland. The conference will be held from May 28th to May 29th in 2009 in the University of Tampere.

The Future of the Consumer Society conference will cover two subjects:
consumption and futures research methods. Consumption is becoming a key issue in the debate on creating a sustainable future. In particular, the world-wide spread of extremely resource-intensive lifestyles and economic practices has become one of the most important challenges we face.

Futures studies is ideally placed to help face this challenge as it includes tools for describing possible, probable, and desirable variations of the present that are both social and “natural”.
Furthermore, by examining a variety of possibilities we can come closer to choosing and shaping the future, rather than merely predicting it.

The conference will bring together the best futures studies experts in the scientific community to interact with corporate representatives and policymakers. The goal of the conference is to assist decision-makers by providing them with the tools to gain a better understanding of the potential consequences of present and future decisions.

The conference website will contain the most up-to-date information regarding the FFRC 2009 conference. Please see: http://www.futuresconference.fi/2009.

The deadline for submitting abstracts is 1 February, 2009. The call of papers is available from http://www.futuresconference.fi/2009/2nd_Call_2009_web.pdf. If you have any questions, please contact us at conference2009@tse.fi.

We look forward to seeing you in Tampere in May 2009.

Best Wishes, on behalf of the organizing committee,

Professor Markku Wilenius
Conference Chair

Public lecture by Frank Trentmann

  • Professor Frank Trentmann, Birkbeck College, University of London
  • 17th September, 10 o’clock, University of Helsinki, the Small Festival Hall (University of Helsinki, main building, Fabianinkatu 33, 4th floor)

Professor Trentmann will give a public lecture concerning the rise and fall of Free Trade as a mass movement in U.K. aimed at multi-disciplinary audience bringing together economists, other social scientists, historians and perhaps also civil servants and people from NGOs. In the battle for Free Trade agricultural products played an important role. Among his latest publications are Consuming Cultures, Global Perspectives: Historical Trajectories, Transnational Exchanges (Oxford and New York: Berg, 2006, edited with John Brewer); The Making of the Consumer: Knowledge, Power and Identity in the Modern World (Oxford and New York: Berg, 2006, editor); Civil Society: A Reader in History, Theory and Global Politics (Palgrave Macmillan, 2005, edited with John A. Hall).

Trentmann’s new book Free Trade Nation: Commerce, Consumption, and Civil Society in Modern Britain was published in February 2008 by Oxford University Press.

The lecture is organized by Consumer Economics (Department of Economics and Management) and the Transformation of Consumer Society post-graduate training project (Consumer Economics and Social History) (http://www.valt.helsinki.fi/blogs/kulutus/tutkijakoulu/english/index.htm). Tiedote: Gradupalkinto Laaksolle

Julkaisuvapaa perjantaina 23.5. klo 10.00

Kulutustutkimuksen gradupalkinto Maarit Laaksolle

Kulutustutkimuksen gradupalkinto on myönnetty Maarit Laaksolle koululaisten kulutusta käsittelevästä lopputyöstä. Palkintotyö oli innovatiivinen ja rohkea, palkitun työn valinnut professori Kaija Turkki Helsingin yliopistosta kehui. Kulutustutkimuksen seuran jakama pro gradu –palkinto jaettiin perjantaina Helsingissä.

Maarit Laakson tutkielma Varhaisteinien brändiarviointien synty vertaisryhmässä on hyväksytty Vaasan yliopiston kauppatieteellisessä tiedekunnassa markkinoinnin laitoksella.
